ASD Transition Flat

Out Of the Box- ASD Transition Accommodation

We plan to offer a 4 bed flat with communal living spaces. It includes 2 ensuites and 1 shared bathroom. This accommodation is for young people with Autistic Spectrum Conditions. This will be a first floor flat, in sort after High Street location, up stairs from the Positive Minds Hub.

For many young autistic people, transitions and change are challenging. For many becoming an adult and moving out can be fraught with anxiety. Many of the young people we work with fear they will live at home forever. They worry they will struggle to get a job or have a relationship. Others fear leaving the comfort and security of their family homes.

The Out of the Box project, wants to pilot a transition project, supporting young people through this life event. From their box (bedroom); into shared accommodation. The idea is that learning and living with others in a similar stage in life provides peer learning. It also offers friendship opportunities. Additionally, there are daily support sessions with a staff member. Where they will learn the basics of how to successfully manage a tenancy and other independent living skills.

One of the main benefits of going to university, is that young people have to grow up quick, manage budgeting, cooking, doing the laundry alongside their work/ education commitments. But, why should this just be for young people able to go to university, when most young people would benefit.

Out of the Box provides this opportunity.

This flat will cater for young people who have the capacity to live independently, but just need some extra support. It will not have staff on site 24/7. We know from many of our families that we work with. There is a desperate need for this. There is also a need for young people with more significant needs, who need 24/7 support. This type of accommodation, is something that we hope to deliver in the future.
